Housing and constructionHOUSING
The growth of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area is based on economically, ecologically and socially sustainable development. Major new residential areas will be developed and provided with good public transport connections, primarily on rail. The cities of Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa apply joint criteria in the selection of residents for city rental housing.
Homes in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area are smaller and densities are higher than the average elsewhere in the country while, at the same time, a high proportion of dwellings are rental apartments and in blocks of flats. Just under half of all owner-occupied housing is managed by housing companies.
