Culture and libraries

Cultural events and institutions in the area are open to everyone. Elementary art education and art groups for children and young people are intended for local residents only.

The city libraries of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen together make up the network of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Libraries (HelMet). The HelMet Libraries have a joint online service, joint user regulations and joint fees. The HelMet database allows everyone in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area to access the collections of all participating libraries.

Helsinki will be the World Design Capital of the year 2012. The collaborating cities in Helsinki’s World Design Capital project, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti, will participate in the planning and execution of the design year’s programme.
