According to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Climate Strategy to the Year 2030, the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by a third per person from the current level in the Helsinki metropolitan area by the year 2030. The climate strategy has been developed in cooperation with YTV (now HSY) and the cities of the capital region.

HSY waste management organises the waste management for residential buildings and public administration properties throughout the metropolitan area, it is responsible for the collection of recyclable materials and hazardous waste, as well as providing the waste management regulations guiding the sorting of waste. HSY waste management is part of the HSY Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority.

HSY water services takes care of water services in the Helsinki metropolitan area. It supplies drinking water to over one million inhabitants in the Helsinki metropolitan area, treats municipal and industrial wastewater as well as builds and repairs the water pipe and sewer network. ENVIRONMENT MONITORING AND EDUCATION
HSY Regional and Environmental information continuously monitors air quality using seven permanent measuring stations and four mobile measuring stations. Results are updated hourly at the HSY website.

The Climateinfo helps residents and small and medium-sized enterprises in the metropolitan area to make climate-friendly choices. It collects information, gives advice, educates and organises events. The centre is part of the national energy advice body for consumers.
