Unemployment on modest decline in the Helsinki region
The unemployment rate in the city of Helsinki region was 6.5 percent in September 2011, according to the Ministry of Labour and the Economy. The national unemployment rate was 8.3 percent. The region’s unemployment was down by 0.6 percent from the same period a year earlier.
The number of job seekers who had been unemployed for more than a year was 11,000 in the Helsinki region and 56,300 in the whole country. The national number was down by over 200, that is, by 0.4 percent. The decline in the Helsinki region was close to 300, that is, 2.5 percent.
The number of young unemployed job seekers (younger than 25) was 4,400 in the Helsinki region and 27,000 in the whole country. Their number was down by nearly 600 in the region (11.8 percent) and about 2,800 in the whole country (9.5 percent).
