Travel Cards changed only at service points from 4 May onwards

From Tuesday 4 May onwards, old Travel Cards can no longer be changed to new ones at R kiosks, Stockmann department stores and VR’s booking offices. The change will only be possible at Travel Card service points, i.e. HSL’s service points in Helsinki, citizen's offices in Espoo and Vantaa and service points in Kerava, Kirkkonummi and Kauniainen.

Period tickets and value left on the old card are transferred to the new one. There are no changes to the use of the card.

Cards can be changed free of charge until 10 November 2010. The old cards can be used for traveling until the same date.  However, the old cards can no longer be loaded.  From 11 November 2010 onwards, only new Travel Cards can be used for traveling. Old cards will be swapped for a processing fee for another two years.

There are about 700,000 Travel Cards in active use, out of which about 600,000 have already been swapped.

All Travel Cards are changed to new ones that are more economic and technically more versatile than the old cards. The old Travel Cards have been in use for 8 years already.  They have functioned well but they are reaching the end of their lifecycle. Generally, electronic cards, e.g. debit and credit cards, are renewed every few years.
