Public transport is increasingly popular in Helsinki Region

Use of public transport in the Helsinki region continued to increase through the first half of 2011. Increase in 2010 was 2.3% from the previous year, and the upward trend prevailed in January-June 2011, which showed 2.8% growth. Based on the trend, growth in 12 months will exceeds the estimated growth for 2011 at 2.0%.

Based on the first six months of 2011, operating income of Helsinki Region Transport for 2011 is estimated to be €521.2 million, exceeding the budget by 9.5%. Close to one half of the income comes from ticket sales. At an estimated €255.0 million, income from ticket sales will be 3.3% higher than estimated. Ticket prices were raised by one percent on average at the beginning of the year.

All modes of public transport will show growth in 2011 with the exception of trams, which will show some decrease due to harsh winter conditions and rail construction in the summer. 

Roughly 1.5 million travellers were inspected in January-June 2011, and 3.6% of them were found to travel without a ticket or with an invalid ticket.

Public transport in the Helsinki region is operated by Helsinki Region Transport, which serves Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kerava and Kirkkonummi – altogether over one million people. Helsinki Region Transport operates buses, trams, commuter trains, the metro and the Suomenlinna ferry.
