New exhibition challenges consumers to evaluate their carbon footprint
Shopping Basket Of Your Life, an exhibition by Climateinfo on view at Helsinki's Laituri gallery, makes consumer choices and their impact on the climate tangible by illustrating the carbon dioxide emissions created in different areas of life in a shopping context. Visitors pick blocks corresponding to the emissions of their choices into shopping baskets and to ring up their “purchases”.
A full shopping basket is the equivalent of the carbon footprint of an average Finn, which is approximately 250 kg per person in a week, or 13,000 kg per person in a year. To fight climate change, we should reduce our annual carbon footprint to 2,000 kg per person by 2050.
Climateinfo is a service operated by the Helsinki Region cities and by municipal organizations. It seeks to motivate citizens to fight climate change and shift towards a low-carbon lifestyle.
Shopping Basket Of Your Life at Laituri, Helsinki City Planning Department’s meeting place, through November 26th, 2011, Tue-Fri 10-18, Sat 12-16
