Journey Planner calculates carbon emissions and calorie consumption

The Journey Planner maintained by Helsinki Region Transport now shows carbon dioxide emissions next to route suggestions. The counter shows how much emissions can be avoided by choosing cycling, walking or public transport instead of driving. 

In addition, the calculator assesses the carbon dioxide emissions on an annual level by the chosen journey and type of transport. 

Furthermore, the calculator assesses energy consumption, which is expressed in kilocalories and as pieces of chocolate. In case of public transport, the calculator assesses the calorie consumption for the walking distances associated with public transport use. The calculator also assesses calorie consumption for journeys made by foot or bicycle.

The new service is part of Julia 2030, a project aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the Helsinki region.
