Environmental awareness raised in selected schools
Nine comprehensive schools in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area will start cooperation this autumn with HSY Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority and Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre in educating the younger pupils in environmental awareness during the school year 2010-2011. The schools will incorporate a special environmental course in their curricula.
The course teaches the children about moderate consumption and recycling. The goal is to encourage the schools’ pupils and staff to work for the environment, to help reduce the amount of waste produced by the schools, and to increase the level of recycling. The teachers are offered training, ready-made lessons and teaching materials.
The schools should adopt such practices during the school year that promote the goals of the programme on a long-term basis.
